Moreton Bay Sailing Route

Her name is Sheer Bliss. She is a 32ft fiberglass mono hull Catalina 320, with a pedigree for effortless sailing across endless seas. As the clock struck 15mins past nine, Rear Admiral Taylor upped fender, checked the rear vision mirror, and with a high pitched shrill he yelled “cast away ye maties” and we set sail for the sand hills on Moreton Island.

With the sun on our necks necks, and the breeze at our backs we motored out of East Coast Marina (Manly) and up the channel to islands of Moreton Bay. About a minute into our adventure the coxswain had the yatch tacking and jibing looking for that elusive trade wind, know as Moreton Bay Doctor. Having found a reasonable gust, we cut the motor, hoist the mainsail, locked in the halyards and set course for the southern tip of Green Is. Having turned green during the last tacking maneuver we decided a tackless next 30mins was a must, and with a 10kt south westerly this was looking very doable.. Very doable that was until with hit a severe lull just south of Mud Is. . This time sanity prevailed, and we flipped the switch on the diesel inboard, and motored our way back into the SW, and back to a wind assisted cruising speed of 7kt..

After a very pleasant 3hrs of jibeless sailing we arrived at our destination, Small Sand Hills, Moreton Is., where we downed anchor and took a well earned rest.. We had our lunch, and swim astern of “Sheer Bliss”, in the cool shark infested waters of Moreton Bay.. After a 40min break, we upped anchor, set the sails, and the GPS unit for our return journey to the East Coast Marina, Manly.. With another 3 and a bit hours of sailing, I took up position atop the poop deck, where I stayed till we entered the channel on the entrance to the marina…

With another wonderful day of sailing under our belt, and with slightly wind burnt lips our Coxswain RJ Taylor steered “Sheer Bliss” back into dock just on dusk.
